hi e

re, "when you get that "choose program" message, how do you know what to choose? I open everything with Wordpad because usually that works. Sometimes I get code, though, and just can't open the saved item. Wondering if you have any thoughts about this...."

i do.

this has been a source of frustration for me from time to time. really makes me feel like a dummy, too. all i can say is that if one program does not work, try another, but make sure that you have not checked the box that says "always use this program to open this file" (or words to that effect), because if you have made a selection that does not open the file, and the box is checked, you will be stuck with that association. until the pyramids crumble to dust.

having said that, there is a way to undo the association, but imo, it's better to avoid that check mark in the first place and keep yourself out of that loop.

as requested, just some thoughts.....

:)
