We will soon have 3 seaview cameras for the dive team. I just ordered a mini-50 with 75 feet of line to be mounted on one of our dive helmets. We primarily use the SEVU cameras for deep water searches where there are multiple hazards such as tree lines, fishing lines, and very low visibility. The cameras find our targets before we put divers in the water. When we have a large search area, the cameras are the first in the water. The new mini-50 camera will be used on May 5th for the first time during a training operation in a local underwater cave.

We are gearing up for an archeological excavation of this cave and will have a support team at the surface watching the underwater archeology in progress. This weeks training will be with lift bags and crates removing some of the larger rocks. The helmet mounted camera will be complimented with underwater duplex communicaitons between diver and surface.

Useing the SEVU cameras on past operations, we have found a boat, two vehicles, and countless other less significant items such as coolers, road signs, tackle boxes, fishing poles, a boat motor, and a TV. The "see in the dark" capabilities also help cut through the low visibility. We have not found a person yet using the cameras other than in the training environment.

Here is an example of the cameras capabilities - The local Dive Shop (a SEVU dealer here in San Marcos) has a 15 foot deep in-ground pool that was not clorinated over the winter months. You could not see more than a few inches into the greenish brown water. We stuck the SEVU camera in at the 3 foot level and could clearly see all the way down to the drain at the bottom of the 15 foot level. It was most impressive and what sold us on the cameras. We bought our first camera that day and our second camera less than a month later.

We will probably purchase a few more mini-50's for helmet mounting for shallow operations. Last year we inspected some dams and pipes - an ideal situation for for the mini-50 attached to a VCR/TV combo.
