Funny I was just telling Neo this week of the incredible resurgence in anything in Eastern art/religion/phiolosophy/design in the US right now. Small step for science , giant leap for mankind. For instead of the centuries old posture of "it will all be handed to you after you die , go and be judged , or the angel taps you on the shoulder and waves a magic wand , and the gates fly open and trumpets sound routine ".... We might know ourselves today<G> Understanding the Neurochemistry of deep contemplative states is intriguing ...but as for most attempts by science to create hypothesis , they go first to look at the extreme examples , and find out later it were much easier to start at the beginning. Deep contemplation is the rarest of states, which first begins with mastering meditation...and meditation is an extremely rare state as well , which stems from out of concentration... and concentration is just the fundamental beginning but is also extremely rare state , few possess even it. If they could just try to understand what it is to "Concentrate " , then they would understand all, or at least the doorway to all the other deeper states of consciousness. They often start on the wrong end of the donkeycart but makes them seem important if they start at the end of the story first. Also makes a more intriguing story to start with the chemistry of heavenly trances. Just understanding the Mind at rest would be sufficient to prove that the Universe is total Chaos ...now they want to see it when it really comes together . These states are real , for me usually in the morning just before waking I have incredible depth perception beyond myself . ;-)
