Scene Three: Fantabulous daytime activity … “Fermat’s Enigma” by Simon Singh. My mom used to read Chinese classical novels to me, with her finger moving from character to character, when I was four years old. “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”, “Journey to the West”, “Brotherhood of the Marshes” and “Warring States of the Spring and Autumn Period”. One chapter per night, without fail. My father, older than mom by 28 years, used to tell me stories, in his native English language, of people (‘wild men stories’) that lived in the forest, strange machines, secret caves, adventures, and battles. One day, I asked my mom whether we could cover two chapters and was refused. My mom tells me now that I reached for the books the next day and started reading on my own, unable to pronounce each character, but able to understand the general meaning. After finishing all the Chinese books, I asked for the ‘wild men’ stories, and was disappointed that my father had no such books, and was making them up as he went, night by night. I found the foundation of my father’s stories amongst my buddy’s childhood books in the guest room. Excellent nocturnal activity by the beach … comfortable bed, crisp linen, fluffy pillows, and “The Land that Time Forgot”, “The People that Time Forgot”, and “Out of Time’s Abyss” by Edgar Rice Burroughs. No 2001 financial implications in this scene, except that money is good, for reading at night.
