Gottfried, Re: AMD/INTC cash / share

Thanks for looking that up... but don't forget that AMD does have some real long-term debt (on very favorable terms) relative to INTC (data from most recent earnings releases)

AMD - LT Debt of $3.97/share (including convertible as debt and using diluted shares), $2.54 after conversion (assuming $500M in convertible)

INTC - LT Debt only $0.10/share. (Side note, INTC shares outstanding has been diminishing slightly due to the repurchase program, both on a basic and fully diluted basis).

Or perhaps look at book values (yes, lots of room for accounting differences here), values from Yahoo Profiles:

AMD - $10.42
INTC - $5.49

OTOH, INTC is also saddled with the wondrous "Other" category which doesn't seem to be on a straight path to profitability. I gathered some historical data but haven't made any pictures (ie graph) yet. If it looks halfway interesting I will post someplace - should also add some AMD info for perspective.

While massive price reductions could increase demand... I think this will be limited since the price of the CPU has become modest relative to the total system price in the more price-sensitive low-end boxes. I spent triple the money on the OS compared to the CPU for my last system. (No Linux quips please, I will explore this but it cannot fulfill the needs for my current system builds.)

I think we need some SMP opportunities so enthusiasts like myself can soak up some of the extra CPU production potential. <g> I have to try and laugh about 760MP since being patient doesn't seem to be enough.

Gottfired, per share, but intel has the deeper sea of cash due to the enormous number of shares they have. Once their earnings crater their shares will really drop relative to AMD.
