DJN 2:54am Taiwan UMC sees Q2 capacity utilisation at 50 pct & sees Q2 sales down 30 pct from Q1

(and futures seem to drop a bit after that release )

TAIPEI, April 30 (Reuters) - United Microelectronics Corp
(UMC) <2303.TW> <UMC.N>, the world's second-largest contract
chipmaker, said on Monday its capacity utilisation rate could
fall to as low as 50 percent in the second quarter.
UMC Chairman John Hsuan, who had in the past declined to give
the closely watched rate, which reflects demand for UMC's
made-to-order microchip manufacturing services, said the first
quarter capacity utilisation was at 70 percent.
UMC's rival, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC)
<2330.TW> <TSM.N>, said its capacity utilisation rate would be
somewhere between 45 and 50 percent in the second quarter.
