ROTFL. From what I hear, employers are clamoring for them. I don't think the "disadvantage" in this allegedly "critical" skill will affect their success.

Either Microsoft software is easy to use or it isn't. If it's easy to use, these college kids can learn it as necessary. Only if it isn't easy to use (and necessary, as you assert), should they need to develop skills ahead of time.

It's much more important that they learn things like how to think, read, write, etc. I think their decisions of what software to use shows they're able to think independently, and if I were an employer I would prize that much more highly than their knowledge of what menu to use to change the color of underlining.
