Management is the difference.
GLW has top class management and LU has, imo, lousy management. LU up to their (_i_) in debt.
GLW is in the same boat as other tech companies suffering an economic slowdown. LU has it own unique problems.

Yes I like GLW Merlo. Met up with some techies this weekend and they are placing their bets on ALA taking LUs F/O division. Not sure it matters which company you choose but you should have some exposure to this area in anyones portfolio. However, those investors who own all or many of the fiber builders JDSU/GLW/NT/CSCO/ALA/JNPR/CIEN etc... are really not diversified as owning any one of these companies would give ample exposure to at least one fiber optic area....
