lyn, Make sure your power supply is up to it. Get a new heat sink of the better silver paste aided kind and make sure you implement the thermistor shutdown sensor software on your mobo and you should be fine.
Another fan would help. You can get them from surplus places. get a japanese 12 volt 4" fan. This can be mounted externally and run from a line cord transformer to draw air out of the case. It will look funnt, but wiork well as it gets the warm air out.
You will need to find a place where it can draw the air out, a set of vent holes or whatever, or cur a 4" square hole and mount it there. This cut hole is best and remember cases only cost $25 for a new one and you will probably throw this away.

Lynn, running a 1GHz athlon 24/7 is no problem at all. On mine, the CPU temperature stabilizes after 15 minutes. Don't even bother with extraordinary measures like a bigger heat sink unless you find that the CPU temp is over 50 degC after running a few hours. Most motherboard's temperature monitors can be checking in the BIOS setup available when the system reboots, but the temp monitoring utility can usually be installed so its available anytime or displayed on the "tray."
