Robert, here's review site epinions.com

I don't have knowledge of these camcorders myself. Except, I'd ask if there is format compatibility with the playback device. Read somewhere DVD is beset by format wars.

I bought a Sony Digital Handy cam "Digital8 DCR-TRV510 NTSC, about a year ago.

It has 360 zoom and digital still capability.

Overall I have found it simple to use and with automatic setting provides good results.

I have used the automatic setting and adjust only the zoom had good results. I have taken pictures of friend skeet shooting up on Highway 35 "Skyline" and was able to see the 12 gauge shot's wad move through the air for more than ten frames. This camera shoots at 60 frames per second and actually trace a 12 gauge through 10 frames. Any single frame you have you can captured on the video, and can be held as a stilled, then you can captured it as a single frame in a JPIG file.

My wife and 14 year old son has successfully used the camera.

I know the newer unit are smaller and better. I would still advice almost any Sony product. I am using a Sony Vio 700 Mz 15" LCD 1" high portable PC, and love it. I have a Sony VideoConferance Camera with auto exposure, a Maciva still as well as a Ricoh Digital still at 2.3 meg pixels and it's great.

Overall Sony has great products at a little higher cost but no complaints here.
