We've seen the same features with industrial output as well. Does the term "dumping" ring a bell? Dumping of a commodity or product below production costs hardly can be explained by economic considerations alone. There are deep political motivations afoot like "market share" with its desire to dominate a market -- the impulse to oligopoly and monopoly.

The dumping of oil on the marketplace isn't even a twinkle in a Saudi Prince's eye, what with production costs as low as they are and reserves so high. The ability of OPEC nations to undercut alternative energy advances using cheap undumped oil are real enough.

Of course, should that fail, there's always the ploy of trumped up international crises and oil shortages to fall back on.
