Good news! When better cars are built, the UAW won't build them:

UAW membership slid 12 percent last year
Reuters, 04.26.01, 4:28 PM ET

DETROIT, April 26 (Reuters) - Membership in the United Auto Workers union declined about 12 percent in 2000, continuing a 20-year retreat as automakers reduce factory jobs.

In its annual financial statements filed with the U.S. Department of Labor, the UAW said its membership stood at 671,853 at the end of 2000, a drop of 90,586 from the previous year's total.

The UAW's membership has dropped steadily since 1979, when it had 1.5 million members. Big Three automakers -- General Motors Corp., (nyse: GM - news - people) Ford Motor Co. (nyse: F - news - people) and the Chrysler side of DaimlerChrysler AG <DCXGn.DE> (nyse: DCX - news - people) -- have all slowly reduced their blue-collar jobs to increase productivity.

The UAW has also had limited success in unionizing workers at parts suppliers. And companies have moved work to lower-labor countries; Delphi Automotive Systems Corp., (nyse: DPH - news - people), the world's largest parts maker, is also the largest private employer in Mexico.

UAW President Stephen P. Yokich was paid a salary of $125,756, and received an additional $19,763 for business expenses and allowances.

12% in just one year! - that's one accomplishment Clinton can be proud of.

So remember, the UAW means not just lousy cars, but forced contributions to the Dem Party by anyone unfortunate enough to buy the junk they purport to build.
