RDRAM Rimms drop in Intel price shift

Part of Pentium 4 shift
By Mike Magee, 30 April 2001 14.35 BST

INTEL TOLD its dealers today that the price of Rambus RIMMs will fall in line with the price drops in the Pentium 4 that it announced.

Although the firm gave no details of what the reduction would be, and instead told its dealers to contact its authorised distributors, the cuts are expected to be broadly in line with the chip drops.

Intel will also allow its dealers to now source their own RDRAM RIMMs with the top processor, the Pentium 4 1.7GHz. Dealers had bitterly complained that they were being forced to accept prices through distributors although they could buy the memory (and the CPUs) cheaper, elsewhere.

At the same time, Intel announced additions to its dealer rebate scheme. This applies if a large number of processors are bought, with $12 rebates on the 1.7GHz, $18 on the 1.5GHz, $13 on the 1.4GHz but only $5 on the soon to be discontinued 1.3GHz Pentium 4.

Most of the Pentium III rebates are comparatively trifling amounts of $5 or so.

Intel also appears to have modified its price protection scheme, as a result of the rapid price changes this month. Distributors are supposed to refuse any requests for boxed chips for the two weeks before future price cuts.

This is intended to prevent dealers getting stung by buying chips at $500, for example, which later fall to $193.
