Dear Tench:

Multi-hop is not as hard as you make it out. The capability is well understood as it has been used all over the place. Internet, Ethernet, repeaters, packet switching, and even the public telephone switched network (PTSN) shows that it is quite possible to do this. The big problem is the compatability testing. This is where both Intel and AMD as well as many others have shown the difficulty. Big numbers math showed the FDIV bug as Linux showed the problem with P3-1.13. The 686B SB VIA bug is another case in point. It is tracking these problems down that causes most slips. The difference is whether their internal or external. The penalties for external are much higher as the cases above have shown especially if "Pooh poohed".
