>Oh yeah - just why is the 760MP late - it IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE !!!<

Top tier manufacturers have said they don't want it.

>And the PaloMeatHead - why is that so late? What infrastructure phony excuse can you offer up on that piece of horsesh$t ?<

No notebook chipsets in volume and manufacturers say they don't want server version.

Oh! You mean desktop Palomino. AMD doesn't need it because TBird will unexpectedly scale to 1.467 GHz.

>And just where is the MuSKANK ?<

Manufacturers said they didn't want it.

Actually, I suspect that Mustang was cancelled because the Pony core was not ready.

And, while AMD claims the reason 760MP was not introduced on time was lack of demand, I would bet it too was not ready until recently. Indeed, they claim it will not work with TBird, so with Mustang being cancelled, it would not have made sense to introduce 760MP before Palomino.

While the current delay in getting mobile Palomino to market is infrastructure related, I don't really think it was ready for prime time until late last month. And you won't see significant shipments of mobile Palomino based notebooks until early Q3, or very late Q2. Anybody who expects mobile Palomino shipments to contribute significantly to AMD's ASP in Q2 is dreaming.

Desktop Palomino is probably being delayed because it has a larger die size than TBird and AMD does not see sufficient profit from the increase in peak speed grade to justify the larger die size. Indeed, it is probably because AMD needed to reduce the die size that desktop Palomino will not feature PowerNow, and it was probably initially designed with PowerNow, so the removal of this feature is delaying desktop Palomino. Additionally, once they decides to remove PowerNow, AMD wanted to launch desktop Palomino about the same time Intel launches Northwood. This may change with the delay in delivery of 0.13-micron equipment.

Dear Paul:

And it is better than to release a POS like P3-1.13. A slipup like that will be remembered far longer than you want. They haven't lived down the FDIV screwup either and its been years. The P4 still has many errata, far more than Athlon's one. AMD is correct to release when its ready, and not when marketing wants. The latter yields those disasters mentioned above.

As to AMD infrastructure policy, I do not happen to agree with that policy. It is causing pain even now. I do not know why they stick to it. Their public statements are probably not the real reason. But Intel is no better and in many ways worse than that.
