France's socialist politics have kept the country on the brink of depression for 20 years now. The huge unemployment is fueled by government policies which stifle all but state controlled businesses. France has no industry of international repute (except tourism of course) and few companies able to compete with Germany's, Japan's or the UK's. The best job in Paris is not engineer, it's waiter.

Yes and the Vichy French collaborated with the Germans after France collapsed in a flash. True there were many who did not and others that felt they had no other choice. My point is the French are only human. They are not some glorious race that can do no wrong, as you would paint them. How much did the poor and middle class pay in taxes so the rich could fly in the Concorde? Would you prefer that the U.S. government take more money from everyone so that a few can fly faster without paying the full price? This is the sort of project governments get into, when they have unlimited control of the purse.
