More evidence to lower rates more..........Ford's April sales tumble

No. 2 automaker's sales fell 14.5 percent; cites weaker consumer spending

May 1, 2001: 12:21 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that April sales fell 14.5 percent to 318,812 cars and trucks and that it was scaling back production in the second quarter to deal with the slowdown.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said the decline suggests consumer spending weakened in the second quarter from the first quarter.

Sales of sport-utility vehicles were strong but car sales were weaker than expected, the company said in a statement.

As a result, Ford (F: Research, Estimates) said it plans to cut North American output 40,000 units to 1.19 million cars and trucks in the second quarter, meaning production will be about 10 percent below year-earlier levels.
