Patricia, I would measure available resources to narrow things down. start>programs>accessories>system tools>resource meter will put an icon in your system tray. Right click on it and click details.

You have a dialup connection at 56 kbps? If the two programs compete for bandwidth, there's not much to do except go with cable or DSL.

You can probably spend a few hours tweaking what you have not and get some improvement, but my own experience and everything I've read, tells me that you won't find a really good solution without installing Win2000.

I haven't used Etrade in a while but their Pulse program was a really bad resource hog under Win98, it sounds like the new one is even worse.

( Which of course opens up a whole new can of worms. )
