John,

SSE is not going to speed up general business apps. It looked to me like it was some kind of graphics benchmarks, but I'm not certain.

John: Those were business apps, not exactly exotic.

Well, they were professional OpenGL apps. Some apps actually suffered, but overall the boost was very significant (for professional OpenGL apps - negligible for others).

Sounds very positive to me. Am I reading too much into it?

It's hard to tell at this stage. Without thorough testing, it's hard to conclusively evaluate the information. One major problem is that (AFAIK!) the new drivers have not been tested on an Athlon system. If the optimizations are purely "SSE2" in nature, Athlon performance will remain constant. That's all speculation though - we just don't know at this time.

I would hazard the guess that Athlon performance will increase somewhat, but not nearly as much as the P4 performance. But, again, that's just an unsubstantiated WAG ;-)
