The truth is if the typical couple were to get a real return of 6% off of FICA contributions, they probably could retire like kings (o.k. millionaires). This just goes to show, what a crummy deal Social Security is to a Boomer (or younger). Of course, the joke is on you, if you are younger than a baby boomer - the only way you'll probably break even on social security is if average life expectancy goes up to over 100 (of course this means that you'll probably have to work till you're 80 before qualifying for benefits).
