What's the procedure to get a 3rd party fab to make your chips? Send 'em the schematics? Send them the masks? Send Paul Engel? Send em Paul would probable be best but he's not always available. But seriously, it's been about 5 years since I went through this but it may still be basically the same. You start with a netlist, which is a description of your design on a gate level and how everything is hooked up. This requires a common set of libraries which describe what the devices are (flops, latches, AND OR NAND XOR gates etc etc). You can't just send a set of masks because they are specific to your process, and not everyone has the same recipe. The foundry will take the netlist and generate their own set of masks for their own recipe. Will their device perform the same as your device? Logically yes(probably) but performance wise who knows? This is a very simplified version but accurate to a first order. EP
