Patricia,

You can uncheck those items in Startup (msconfig) or Start/Programs/Start Ups, your program icons will REMAIN in
Start/Programs. As PW mentioned you could make a folder on your Desktop and put the most often used Prog Icons there and/or into the QuickLaunch Bar beside the Start button
on the Taskbar.

Hope this helps.

Alex

Un-checking a program in MSCONFIG will not remove its shortcut from StartUp.

The MSCONFIG utility allows you to check and un-check programs that execute when Windows starts. The nice thing about MSCONFIG is that when you disable a program, that disabled program will still appear in the list, making it easy to change your mind.

MSCONFIG alters the action of the shortcuts in Start/Programs/StartUp when Windows starts. It doesn't remove them, or change what they do if you execute them manually.

Perhaps an example will help...

On my system, I have a calendar program. It displays the current month. I have a shortcut in StartUp which executes this program so my calendar is available immediately.

If I accidentally close my calendar, I don't need to re-boot my system so it starts again automatically, but simply click Start/Programs/StartUp/Calendar. I can execute the program from within the StartUp folder.

If I change my mind and no longer wish my calendar available when I boot, I can move its icon to any location other than StartUp, Or I can un-check Calendar in MSCONFIG. Both options give the same results, and both are easy to do and undo.

Cheers, PW.
