Only because there's realistic competition out there. The product is still faster than what they had previously, in most cases by a fairly large amount. And it's totally historically normal for new cores from Intel to have astoundingly large die areas. The P4, in fact, is rather conservative in this regard.

Mind you, I don't think the P4 as-is is competitive. But I don't think it is a disaster, at least once you ignore aspects of competition.
