And there's no reason Nvidia couldn't have a similar driver optimized for AMD's 3DNow!.

Aside from the fact that SSE has a larger installed base and AMD's moving to SSE2 for the K8 generation...

If there's anything about 3D graphics that requires double-precision floating-point, I'd like to know what.

High quality per pixel lighting, and complex depth resolution requires double precision. Single precision will not be acceptable for much longer.
