That's very interesting.I have great compassion for people dealing with medical issues, of all kinds. Psychological and physical wellness is important not only on a personal level, but it is important to society. We benefit greatly from having people in our society who can function. Unhappy people, unwell people, work out there problems on the rest of us, or function poorly, and put us all at risk.

The news got out, and the funding got turned off, liberal though we may be. Being a little less tolerant at the time (18 or 20 years ago), I didn't pursue the issue much.

How did tolerance enter the equation? We weren't discussing whether sex-change operations should be tolerated, we were discussing whether they ought to be publicly funded. There is a big difference.

A very good novel, okay uneven novel but compelling story, is Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg. A very gruesome jailhouse scene involving the guards, but that can skipped over if the stomach can't take it.

It starts out in the 60's sometime, if I remember right. I just went and looked it up to make sure I got the name right and read the reviews. One said it didn't put itself well in the context of the time. I disagree, though. Overall historical time, perhaps not. But in terms of showing this woman's story not only in the personal, but in terms of the community, and it's diversity and the challenges faced in weaving the various aspects of it together, very much so, imo.

And I just found the character interesting, too. :)
