Ron Kovic (played by Tom Cruise in Born on the Fourth of July) was a friend of my family when I was a boy in Venice, CA. He was over at my house all the time, it seemed. He always had some good dope to smoke and after all it was the late 60's/early 70's in VENICE. I still remember when he was featured as the cover story in Rolling Stone mag back then. Ron had a big impact on how I viewed the government and war. I've never seen the movie as I'm sure I wouldn't be happy with it. On the other hand, I've read some interesting essays on "survivors guilt." I recommend to all interested an essay in Christopher Buckley's book "Wry Martinis" about this very subject. D
