Thomas: techno-trickle down from military R&D is a long established benefit, but if that was the goal in the first place it needn't come so expensively. Further, if it's wacko regimes we are concerned about, it would be ever-so-much cheaper to use the carrot with Russia, stop them from proliferating technology as they are now because of being so strapped for cash, further economic development there and swing them away from China all at the same time, than to break our own balls and losing all those other opportunities. China is also a great proliferator and they will not stop as long as GWB continues to harden our respective diplomatic positions.

The only other reason to build a missile shield is to combat a terrorist strike. If our national security apparatus actually has knowledge now of some group it believes has or may soon have this capacity, why are they not acting NOW to eliminate them? Which is simply to say that the money is better spent on diplomatic efforts, economic development and international security and intelligence.
