(should I say something about - Wonder what's eating him - sorry) Alleged cannibal appears in court A 35-year-old man arrested on charges of cannibalism is expected to undergo further psychiatric treatment to determine his mental state. Patrick Msane was arrested on Sunday in the Nkonka Reserve on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast for allegedly eating human flesh. He appeared in the Umbumbulu magistrate's court on Wednesday and the case was postponed for further investigation. He will be remanded at the Westville Prison outside Durban. In the meantime police have still not managed to determine the identity of Msane's alleged victim, who was chopped into small pieces. The victim's remains were taken to a mortuary in Scottburgh for forensic testing. Police have also not determined how or when the victim had been killed or if he had been killed by Msane, who appeared to be mentally ill. When police arrived at Msane's home on Sunday, after being alerted by the community, they found the body of a person chopped into pieces. The head, beaten beyond recognition, and the intestines of the victim were found in a plastic container nearby. Police could not say for certain whether he had started eating the flesh. They found bones, stripped of flesh, on the scene which could possibly have been arm or leg bones. A three-legged pot cooking on a fire contained no cooked meat, only dirty water. Police were alerted to the scene by members of the community who "smelled something funny" coming from the home of the accused. When police arrived at the scene Msane became aggressive. He was finally cornered, arrested and charged with cannibalism. - Sapa Published on the Web by IOL on 2001-05-02 18:11:01 iol.co.za
