What matters is the debt ration to GDP, which is less than 50%, and the percentage of budgeted funds dedicated to debt service, which is less that 20% per year. It is a manageable debt.

By the way, do you think your house was a lousy investment because in 30 years you will have paid more than 5 times the purchase price? Or do you consider other factors, like comparison to rents, or long term equity, or the intangible value of not having to wait to own?
