Californian politics also live under the handicap of the voter initiative, which has resulted in extremely short-sighted laws and politicians who *only* care about what happens between now and the next election, and satisfying whichever constituency he/she thinks will re-elect them. Too bad there is no mechanism for passing the baton within the dominant political party when the current leader obviously is not up to handling a crisis, a la the British system. California needs a Churchill to take over from Chamberlain. Someone with a vision beyond, "We don't want to spend that much money!! We can't afford to spend that much money!! You don't deserve that much money!! And we won't pay it, but you better keep providing electricity!!"
