Danish mobile operator will use industry leading Alcatel LMDS to expand into exploding
broadband services business

Paris, May 2, 2001 - Sonofon, Denmark's second largest mobile operator, has selected
Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) for the deployment of a nation-wide broadband
wireless network in Denmark. In a multi-year contract, Sonofon has also selected Alcatel
as its exclusive local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) supplier for its 26 GHz
spectrum license.

In order to meet Sonofon's ambitious network deployment targets of five base stations per
week, Alcatel will immediately begin delivery of its broadband wireless access solution,
giving Sonofon a significant time-to-market competitive advantage in the Danish market.
Alcatel's solution includes the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager which enables seamless,
end-to-end wireless/wireline management of the network and service delivery. Delivery
of nation-wide business services including high speed Internet and secure virtual private
networks (VPN) are scheduled to begin in July 2001. In addition, Sonofon will also use its
LMDS network for mobile backhaul.

"Alcatel's professional approach to broadband wireless access networks was key in our
decision to select them as our exclusive LMDS technology partner," said Mr. Ulrik Bülow,
Sonofon's CEO. "With a solid understanding of our business needs and objectives, Alcatel
proved flexibility to both accommodate our current needs as well as our needs for future
network development."

"Sonofon further illustrates how progressive telecommunications companies are using
LMDS to quickly and cost effectively expand their service offering and their revenue,"
said Jean-David Calvet, executive vice-president, Fixed Wireless, Alcatel. "Alcatel's
turnkey LMDS solution enables Sonofon to fully exploit their market opportunities."

About Alcatel
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data
networking solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and
consumers worldwide. With 130,000 employees and sales of EURO 31 billion in 2000,
Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.

The comprehensive Alcatel LMDS solution, deployed for more than 100 customers
worldwide, is a multiservice broadband wireless network comprised of base station and
customer premises equipment, and network and service management. A base station,
consisting of digital modulation equipment with optional switching capabilities and
point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic
to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. The base station is also
the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. Customer premises
equipment includes radio termination (RT) transceivers and network termination (NT) units,
which support a full range of services. The network and service management suite
supports complete end-to-end management of both the wireless and wireline portions of
the network, providing a full range of VPN capabilities, billing and performance information,
statistics and maintenance support.
