In a multi-year contract, Sonofon has also selected Alcatel as its exclusive local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) supplier for its 26 GHz spectrum license. In order to meet Sonofon's ambitious network deployment targets of five base stations per week, Alcatel will immediately begin delivery of its broadband wireless access solution, giving Sonofon a significant time-to-market competitive advantage in the Danish market. Alcatel's solution includes the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager which enables seamless, end-to-end wireless/wireline management of the network and service delivery. Delivery of nation-wide business services including high speed Internet and secure virtual private networks (VPN) are scheduled to begin in July 2001. In addition, Sonofon will also use its LMDS network for mobile backhaul. "Alcatel's professional approach to broadband wireless access networks was key in our decision to select them as our exclusive LMDS technology partner," said Mr. Ulrik Bülow, Sonofon's CEO. "With a solid understanding of our business needs and objectives, Alcatel proved flexibility to both accommodate our current needs as well as our needs for future network development." "Sonofon further illustrates how progressive telecommunications companies are using LMDS to quickly and cost effectively expand their service offering and their revenue," said Jean-David Calvet, executive vice-president, Fixed Wireless, Alcatel.
