He didn't go short. You don't go short on a down gap because you're on the opposite side of the MMs. If you want to go short, you go long right now. The purpose of this is to prepare your psychology. Then you're emotionally ready to sell the long when the stock moves back up, say up one point, and then sell short if conditions are right.
