I understand - pls correct me if I see it wrong from this side of Atlantic - that the majority of people in US did everything they could to help the consumption (plastic to the hilt, consumer credits etc) but oth never touched or kept their consuming fingers away from their 401k (even when they started to slump).

And, btw, they borrowed handsomely (actually still doing it full speed) to buy a new house. So the way it looks, the free flowing money passes via Fannie Mae much more than WS.
