did some digging on bloomberg for info and it looks like the deal might be more solid than we suspect. Here is few points of consideration:

1)amd recently started to work with ibm on soi dumping their investment into work with mot -- UMC said it had developed a manufacturing process with ibm and infinion to build faster and more complicated chips

2)intel throwing 7.5b to .13µ 300mm process counting on amd not been able to match it --- Trecenti, the JV of UMC and Hitachi, is the world's 1st exclusively 300mm fab that has delivered the 1st order to xilinx.

3) In fact, mr Chian of UMC stated clearly that amd is outsourcing because of the recent price cuts in order to reduce the cost of production -- hence per say it is not an issue of demand and supply
