Rambus sees cost of RDRAM falling against SDRAM

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3, (Reuters) - Rambus Inc., a maker of technology to speed the performance of memory chips, said on Thursday it expects the cost of its RDRAM chips to fall significantly compared with SDRAM chips.

Rambus (NasdaqNM:RMBS - news) believes that by year end, RDRAM chips will only cost 20 percent more than SDRAM chips, down from a current price differential of 40 percent, Rambus's Chief Financial Officer Gary Harmon told investors here at the JP Morgan H&Q Technology conference.

By the end of 2002, that price differential will likely narrow to 10 percent more than SDRAM chips, Harmon said.

Rambus does not make or design chips. It licenses its performance-enhancing technology to chipmakers and personal computer makers, who then incorporate that technology into their products.

Rambus charges royalty and up-front contract fees, which is how it generates revenue. Harmon said royalties on memory chips typically run 1 percent to 2 percent.

RDRAM stands for Rambus dynamic random-access memory, while SDRAM stands for synchronous dynamic random-access memory. DRAM chips are the most widely used in personal computers.
