I gotta kind of disagree. Even though I don't like it, but some of the greatest technological inventions has come from the military. I believe a lot of the lasers used in optical networking today came from "Stars Wars" research in the 80's.

Maybe we can argue that money could be used more efficiently through other means (private funding).
