Hi John Petzinger; Rambus press releases are used to issue ramfacts that are only true on ramplanet. Ramanagers at Rambus got wealthy by selling stock to denizens of that planet. Over there, all this makes sense. Over here, they are in deep doodoo. I would not be at all surprised to read one morning that the whole lot of them have been found with plastic bags over their heads.

I think Harmon is referring to the manufactured cost of the chips. They seem to be betting the new 4i RDRAM's will be cost competitive with SDRAM. There are volume price curves to consider, (which would seem to favor SDRAM), and of course there are additional costs between chips and tested modules.
Considering that 256Mb SDRAM's could cost near current 128Mb in the future, that's a lofty goal. (Moore's Law is unstoppable). <g>

BTW, the latest contract prices for 128Mb PC133 chips are ~$4.50.

John, you do not understand... Rambus is all honesty,
they do not lie, technically... It must be very true
that since all wafers cost about the same, so it is very
possible that the little size penalty for Rambus chips,
plus little penalty for chip test, and little more
efforts to make the 800-MHz silicon will be within
20% assuming really mass production. Maybe even 10%.

What they conveniently do not tell you
is how much it costs to make those multilayer
RIMMs with insane trace, via size, and resin control,
plus precise BGA soldering, plus the heat spreader that
must fit all chips simultaneously and perfectly
(otherwise it does not spread)... what else did I miss?
So, the price of consumable product - RIMM - must
be somewhat higher than the competing DIMM, where DIMM
manufacturers do not have to do all this.
