Kava kava is Piper methysticum, one of the coolest-sounding names in all botany. It is a root that contains kavalactones ... kawain, methysticin and congeners. I haven't sapled it myself, but it's supposed to be a hypnotic, like alcohol or valium. don't know what kind of a buzz it is. But it kept the Samoans happy ... or was that the fact that they exported all that fetid Yoni juice to overseas yuppies? <giggle>

Let's face it. If you woke up everyday knowing that your islanparadise was named after a traditional sleepover confection, you'd also be chewing on odd roots looking for the one that got you comfortably numb.
