The agreement was signed between international companies, such as the Malaysian Petronas company, the Swedish Lundin company, the Austrian OMV company and the Sudanese Sudapet company. Speaking at the occasion, the secretary-general of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Hasan Muhammad Ali al-Tawm, said he was delighted by the signing of the agreement and the companies' concensus to continue with oil exploration in Sudan despite the rumours being circulated by some circles. The directors and representatives, who signed the agreement, addressed the gathering and said they would continue investing in Sudan and that they were intending to increase investment in the oil sector. They noted their previous activities in the oilfield which contributed towards the country's development. They said the criticism directed at the oil companies in Sudan was baseless and they thanked the government for the warm welcome. For his part, the minister of energy and mining, Dr Awad Ahmad al-Jaz, said he hoped exploration in Square 5B would be a new resource for our country's economy. He welcomed the partners who signed the agreement on behalf of the government and said: We will support them in various areas after following up their field work. He said Sudan's doors would remain open to all investors. He invited them to visit Sudan to familiarize themselves with the environment and investment opportunities. He said the production of jet fuel was complete and celebrations will be held next Saturday to mark the end of the production of oil derivatives.
