I was talking with a former IBM manager last week, and he claimed to have done the 1GHz core at Somerset.

Well, the last incarnation of the G3 design probably would just reach 1GHz in .13um. But for 2GHz+, a totally new core would be needed. If this guy designed one, it would have to have been completed in about 1 year. I don't think so. I still think they will build off the POWER4 core which easily scales to those frequencies.
