Sarmad, do you have a Satellite dish?
If not you might want to buy one.
>LITTLETON, Colo., May 03, 2001 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Satellite television broadcaster EchoStar Communications Corp. exceeded analysts' expectations with increased earnings and 460,000 new subscribers in the first quarter.

EchoStar's satellite service, DISH Network, had 5.72 million subscribers as of March 31, up 48 percent from last year. Analysts had expected about 80,000 less subscribers.

"It was substantially better than we expected," said Vijay Jayant, an analyst at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. "It says management, in a tough economic environment, was really focused on driving the business."

EchoStar shares closed at $36.93 Thursday on the Nasdaq Stock Market, up $4.63, after the announcement that EchoStar recorded a net loss of $167 million for the quarter. The loss is down 9.8 percent from $186 million in net losses for the same period last year.

Adjusted net loss was 16 cents per share, far better than analysts' expectations of 24 cents a share. That excludes a one-time charge of $92 million that reflected the changing value of strategic investments.

EchoStar's cash flow rose to $51 million in the first quarter, compared to a loss of $88 million a year ago. Revenue increased 52 percent from $566 million in the first quarter 2000 to $862 million in the first quarter this year.

Company executives said they expected to lose more subscribers than usual in the second quarter because of a February price increase in EchoStar's basic package.

It took an average of $432 for EchoStar to acquire each new subscriber this quarter, officials said in a conference call. The $48.30 EchoStar earned per customer in a month was about a dollar above Jayant's estimate.

EchoStar expects to add 1.5 to 2 million DISH subscribers through the end of the year.

EchoStar is the No. 2 direct broadcast satellite provider behind DirecTV, which has about 9.5 million subscribers.
