LOUIS & SYDNEY, Australia--(BW HealthWire)--May 4, 2001-- Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Nasdaq:SIAL - news), a $1.1 billion life science and high technology company, announced an agreement with Proteome Systems, a leading proteomics company, under which Sigma-Aldrich would manufacture and/or exclusively distribute certain products developed in collaboration with Proteome Systems. The recently introduced ProteoPrep(TM) line of sample preparation kits is the first in a number of product groups that will be launched as a result of this agreement. The ProteoPrep(TM) line consists of three kits and two stand-alone reagents that are optimized for use in proteomic research, but also work extremely well for standard research applications. These kits include new and innovative detergent formulations that improve solubility and allow for higher protein loads, study of membrane proteins and greater visibility of low abundance proteins in 2D gels. Sigma-Aldrich and Proteome Systems plan to expand this collaborative relationship to include the development of other proprietary technologies and systems used in proteomic research. Both Sigma-Aldrich and Proteome Systems, together with Shimadzu Biotech, are members of The PROTEOMICS Alliance, a group of companies working together on a systems approach to solving the complexities of the proteome. Dave Julien, President of the Biotechnology Division of Sigma-Aldrich said, ``We believe our agreement with Proteome Systems is truly synergistic. Sigma-Aldrich's R&D, manufacturing, and distribution capabilities, coupled with Proteome System's expertise and comprehensive approach, will allow rapid availability of innovative products for an exciting new market.'' CEO and founder of Proteome Systems, Dr. Keith Williams said, ``The new products of the partnership with Sigma-Aldrich form part of Proteome Systems' fully integrated proteomics platform ProteomIQ(TM), which will be released as a total proteomics solution in the third quarter 2001. We are delighted to be working with Sigma-Aldrich who brings a wealth of experience in product formulation and distribution to the partnership.''
