In a sense the application for margin tries currently to do just that, i.e., determines your level of experience and 'allows' you to trade more and more sophisticated viz. leveraged securities if your responses display the right level of acumen.

I totally agree. In 1999, I had most of my money tied up in one stock which I was holding for months and supported myself scalping with a $17,000 account. I'm doing that again this year with a slightly larger account.

If you can prove that you can do it with less, they ought to let you.
