Tomcat:

I do agree that it won't be an easy catch for AMD, particularly if the evil invisible hand is as formidable an opponent as in the past...However, never before has AMD been in a position to provide the best price/performance package across all MHz ranges...The laws of economics will be defied only so long!!!

How much cheaper can an AMD box be than an Intel box?

Somewhere between $368 and $468.

I just went to the Compaq store at athome.compaq.com and use the "Built for You" interface to compare the price for a 1.33Ghz Athlon to both 1.5 and 1.7Ghz P4's. From most benchmarks I've seen the 1.33Ghz Athlon is closer to the 1.7Ghz P4 than the 1.5Ghz P4. To make the systems comparable you have to up the size of hard drive and memory on the P4 systems. Once they were upgraded, as best as I could tell, all three were configured the same.
