Regarding Photonic crystals and band gap elements, we are entering an age when Moores law may well apply to photonic chips.. Currently the drive is on for optical gates. Once we acheive this, it will likely have a big impact on the Semi industry.

The Dark fibre capacity is a big financial overhang which no one wants to buy. The Baby Bells are enjoying a Monopoly in as much they have their own local market whilst they are guaranteed long distance. The Long distance Carriers are the ones now in the penalty box. The playing field needs to be levelled. Till that happens , I do not see the Long distance carriers wanting to light up more fibre.
