Merck & Co.'s Judy C. Lewent Joins Dell Board of Directors
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 2001--Dell (Nasdaq:DELL - news), the world's leading computer systems company, today announced the appointment of Judy C. Lewent, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Merck & Co. Inc., to its board of directors.

Ms. Lewent, a member of Merck's management committee, has served as the chief financial officer at the research-driven pharmaceutical products and services company since 1993. In addition, Ms. Lewent has operating responsibilities for Merck's business development and corporate licensing functions, and the company's joint ventures for animal health and over-the-counter products.

During her 21-year tenure with Merck, Ms. Lewent has held positions including vice president of finance, treasurer, and director of acquisitions and capital analysis. Previously, she held senior-level financial positions with Pfizer Inc., and began her career in corporate finance at E.F. Hutton.

``Judy's extensive financial background complements the experience of our other directors and will be invaluable as we work to sustain Dell's position as the most successful computer systems company,'' said Michael Dell, Dell's chairman and chief executive officer. ``Merck is held in high regard by customers, investors, employees and others, and it's our objective to maintain and enhance Dell's similar reputation in our industry.''

Ms. Lewent holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Goucher College in Baltimore, and a master's degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, Mass.
