I remember my first trip to COMDEX in Vegas when we were going to do an IR Link to put into notebook PCs... 1993.
I think that was the first year that they gave the porn industry their OWN building. It is a HUGE industry.

As much as we like to ignore it, there is ONE VERY PROFITABLE internet market place adn high speed connections make it possible. I hear "legit" people in the motion picture industry are NOW applying to work on porn movies as the writers strike might shut down Hollywood. Rumors are they will do more porn movies with actual "acting" because they will be able to get actors and actress to work cheaply.

RE:Why do we need DVD, broadband, HDTV, internet based digital multi-media, etc.?

All people need is some food, shelter, and a little sex. Is that the reality of the world? Hardly. Economics teaches us that peoples' wants are endless and resources are limited. People want all of the above and sometimes go into debt to get it - pretty weird eh.<g>

I don't want to appear sexist or offend anyone, but my anecdotal data indicates that women are somewhat less interested. Is that why there are fewer women in high tech or math and sciences?

That is sexist and you are around the wrong women. I hope people not needing anything related to chips is the basis of your investment philosophy.

In fact, when you think about it a little. Some very basic human needs are served by technology - communication springs to mind. Communication and art are enabled by the technolgies you listed. I need to communicate and I love art.

re: fewer women in high tech or math and sciences

The % of women in all the high-paying science-oriented fields, plotted over the last 40 years, looks like a classic S-shaped curve. That is, the % is small and stable, at first. Then, at some point (and it is different in each field), the % starts to increase. In a decade or so, an inflection point is reached, a brief period of very rapid change as the curve goes vertical. Most of these %es haven't reached the higher stable area of the "S" yet, but, in many cases, the % of women looks like it's going to end up over 50%.

For instance, in the Ob/Gyn specialty, consumer demand is steadily making this a female-dominated field. It'll take another 30 years or so, but I'm guessing that women will end up being 90% of Ob/Gyns. Do you know how much math, chemistry, and biology you have to have just to apply to med school?

My anecdotal evidence is that women are just as interested. But then, I'm married to a physician, who can change out the motherboard on our PC.
