To: HDC who wrote (1855 ) 5/6/2001 9:41:45 PM From: Zelix Respond to of 2477 We've been following these industry numbers, and predictions by technology analysts for quite some time. They usually predict that the middleware market will be x billion in y years, company A gained B mkt share etc., with all kinds of assumptions attached (for enterprise software only, services included, US only, mainframe apps included, etc.) IBM can always claim new share, if they start including their share of CICS in mainframe market. If a new web gui built to talk to the mainframes, that can be included to the new segment of e-commerce. It is confusing .. it only helps a second/third rank firm to make a sales pitch, or an analyst to push/pull a stock. Do the analysts know (or care) if IBM is giving away WebSphere with their machines and still count # of licenses? Do they know how many copies IBM sold at corporations where IBM Global Services doesn't have the IT contract? Why do e-market software leaders such as Ariba, Broadvision, Interworld .. move to support Weblogic? Why are prominent integrators such as PW, KPMG, CSC using more of WL? How do we hear more enterprise deals (national and international) using WL? They are not talking about WebSphere here. I don't doubt if the new version of WebSphere has more nicer features, than their earlier releases. (I am not comparing WL with WS, customers are deciding who is better.)Same is the case with their DB2 compared to Oracle. While DB2 dbs managed terabytes of data way before Oracle touched their TB, it never took off. Guess why OS2 failed against Microsoft Windows 95? For the reason, that I believe, that DB2 and other IBM staple products do not seem to be in step with the users, latest apps and environment. The core may be great but packaging, marketing, usability and adaptability to newer applications .. are all very important. Except for IBM's success in the services market, they still haven't figured out to be a successful software company. It requires singular focus and different business sense - such as MSFT,ORCL and BEAS. We have heard ORCL taking potshots at BEAS, saying that their app svr is several times faster. Now, all of a sudden, analysts find that IBM is taking away BEAS' market. I like to hear the competition talk .. than be quiet. - Zelix
