EDS wins $1 billion in contracts

PLANO, Texas, (Reuters) - Electronic Data Systems Corp. the world's No. 2 computer services company, said Thursday it had won $1 billion in new and extended contracts.

The company said in a statement that it had won a 10-year, $390 million contract from British mortgage bank Abbey National Plc It will provide services to a new venture jointly owned by both companies.

It also won three new and extended contracts with regional phone company BellSouth Corp. for desktop support, disaster recovery and information technology infrastructure services.

EDS also said it had won a two-year contract with the Board of the Austrian Insurance agencies to provide 8 million Austrian citizens with social security smart cards by the middle of 2003.

Afrox, a South African gas and healthcare company, awarded EDS a five-year contract for mainframe and mid-range infrastructure, service desk and desktop services. EDS shares were down 43 cents at $64.40 in early New York Stock Exchange trading.
