Hey brother,

Well, for two reasons...

First, because I believe that Vargas' confidence and fire was sapped in his rout versus Trinidad. Now; obviously, I have no factual evidence to base that upon, but the way in which he lost (knocked down several times, including being essentially KO'ed in the last round)...and, the comments he made following that fight (that he didn't really lose, wanted a rematch, etc) both point to a crisis of conscience.

Of course, that may be wildly off base.

Second, because Wilfredo Rivera's nickname would aptly be "Almost." He took a severe beating from Mosely a few years ago, held his own, and was KO'ed in the final (10th) round; he was beating Delahoya by points when a nasty cut from an accidental headbutt in the 5th round lead to the controversial stoppage of the fight in 1999; and, he fought Pernell Whitaker twice, brilliantly.

The first time, he lost in another controversy - a split decision; in the well-deserved rematch, he lost to a unanimous decision.

Wilfredo Rivera has held his own against four of the best fighters in the sport, barely losing to each one - indeed, coming very close to beating both Whitaker and Delahoya within the last 3 years.

The one time - his last fight, no less - that Vargas fought a bona fide champion, Senor Trinidad, he came within a hairsbreadth of being KO'ed in the first round.

I like Vargas, though my opinion of him is admittedly less than before, but I think that this cat is a tall order for him. If history was any guide, Rivera would give Trinidad a worthwhile fight.

Rivera by KO in the 9th.
